The Adjustable Gastric Banding is a procedure where a band is placed around the upper most part of the stomach.
- The band can be adjusted to increase or decrease gastric restriction, tailored to each patient’s individual satiety. This limits the amount of food or liquids the stomach can store.
- Weight loss is achieved by drastically limiting the food that a patient can ingest, but since liquids are not significantly restricted, patients need to avoid liquid calories.
- Adjustable gastric banding has been proven to provide long-term, significant weight loss. While the band can be removed, it is designed to be permanent. When patients achieve significant weight loss, we would not recommend removing the band, since weight gain will ensure without gastric restriction.
