Bariatric Surgery

vbTypes of Weight Loss Surgery

Conceptually, there are two types of bariatric procedures; those that restrict caloric intake by reducing the gastric capacity and those that result in weight loss primarily by causing malabsorption of food.

Gastric restrictive operations are the most common procedures performed worldwide. Malabsorptive procedures represent < 10% of all procedures performed. This is related to the increased short and long-term risks associated with the surgery.

The Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass combines restrictive and malabsorptive procedures and comprises 75 percent of bariatric surgical procedures.

The Adjustable Gastric Banding is a procedure where a band is placed around the upper most part of the stomach.

Sleeve Gastrectomy is a procedure that induces weight loss by restricting food intake.
